What to see and do in Cantagallo

Cantagallo
Village
Cantagallo is a municipality of 281 inhabitants in the Sierra de Béjar, in the province of Salamanca, whose municipal area borders Extremadura at the peak of Peña Negra, 1,634 metres high, and descends to the río Cuerpo de Hombre, with the village at 932 metres of altitude. According to some writings, its origins go back to Celtiberian times, although hardly any remains of those settlers survive. The image of the Cristo de las Batallas, which gives its name to its 12th-century hermitage, was carried into the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. The village also preserves a 16th-century church dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Rosario, and its main festival falls around 14 September. Today it has a bar serving home-style Salmantine cooking with Extremaduran touches, rural guesthouses, a bakery and a ham factory.
