What to see and do in Cristóbal

Cristóbal
Village
Cristóbal is a village of 158 inhabitants in the province of Salamanca, in the Sierra de Béjar, within the judicial district of Béjar. The earliest human remains in the municipal area date back to prehistory, with Bronze Age rock carvings on granite in the Los Castillos area; in Roman times mines were worked at the Peñas del Ituero and la Toroza, of which slag remains survive, and already in Visigothic times a necropolis of anthropomorphic tombs formed near the boundary with Santa María de los Llanos. As a settlement it was not founded until the repopulation carried out by Alfonso IX of León around 1227, when it was incorporated into the council of Montemayor del Río, from which it took its name. In 1809 Napoleonic troops sacked the village.
The rock carvings of Los Castillos
Monument
In the area of Los Castillos several rock carvings on granite are preserved dated to the Bronze Age, and there and at La Corona, near the mouth of the Sangusín in the Alagón, castros were later built.
