Valdefuentes de Sangusín
Village
Valdefuentes de Sangusín is a municipality of about 180 inhabitants in the comarca of the Sierra de Béjar, whose name refers to the dozens of springs scattered across its municipal area and to the río Sangusín, documented as Salgosín in medieval texts. Its Gothic church is covered by an ashlar vault on four arches and has an attached 25-metre tower with a spiral staircase of 53 steps. The village arose from the repopulation carried out by Alfonso IX of León around 1227, when it was incorporated into the council of Montemayor del Río, and it was the scene of clashes during the War of the Spanish Succession, when the territory was contested between the supporters of the Archduke of Austria and those of Philip V. In 1833 it became part of the province of Salamanca, within the Leonese Region.
