What to see and do in Aldeacipreste

Aldeacipreste
Village
Aldeacipreste is a municipality in the comarca of the Sierra de Béjar, in the province of Salamanca, with 89 inhabitants, formed by the town of Aldeacipreste and the hamlet of Valbuena; its municipal area, of 37 square kilometres, borders Béjar, Lagunilla and Colmenar de Montemayor. It arose around 1227, when Alfonso IX of León created the council of Montemayor del Río, within the Leonese kingdom, in which it remained integrated. The population has fallen sharply in recent decades: from the 225 inhabitants it had in 2000 it dropped to 116 in 2018, a decline of 49%. It has had no train service since the closure of the Vía de la Plata line and has no regular bus line, so the nearest station and airport are those of Béjar and Salamanca, respectively.
The auction of the pernillas
Activity
On 16 August, after the short procession of San Roque, the pernillas are auctioned among the devout: bids are made for the honour of holding one of the poles of the litter and carrying the saint at the moment of his entry into the church for mass.
