What to see and do in La Calzada de Béjar

La Calzada de Béjar
Village
La Calzada de Béjar is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in Castile and León, part of the comarca of the Sierra de Béjar, with an area of 9.46 km² and 80 inhabitants. It owes its name to the Vía de la Plata, which split the village in two and marked the border between the kingdoms of León and Castile: the western part, the Calzada proper, belonged to the Kingdom of León and to the diocese of Coria at least until the 19th century, while the eastern part, Casas de la Calzada, had no church of its own. Throughout the Middle Ages it formed part of the council of Montemayor del Río, in a border position, and the surname "de Béjar" was added to distinguish it from La Calzada de Don Diego. It retains a Roman fort and celebrates the feast of the Cristo on 14 September, with a procession and house-to-house singing.
The Roman fort of La Calzada
Monument
The Roman fort of La Calzada de Béjar is located in the Salamancan municipality of the same name, on the Roman road known as the Vía de la Plata, which linked Emerita Augusta (Mérida) with Asturica Augusta (Astorga) and which, in Arab times, took that name from the brightness of its paving; it was built over an old Tartessian route in the time of Augustus, using the Roman engineering techniques of layering stone, gravel and paving. Near the fort stands milestone CXXXIX, whose inscription places it between the years 98 and 99, during the second consulship of Trajan, in a repair of the road, 139 Roman miles from Mérida. Declared a monument on 3 June 1931, it watched over this strategic passage of the road.
