What to see and do in Horcajo de Montemayor

Horcajo de Montemayor
Village
Horcajo de Montemayor is a municipality of 107 inhabitants in the Sierra de Béjar, in the province of Salamanca, whose name refers to the fork (horcajo) formed by the confluence of the Valtornero stream with the Sangusín river, already in the Tagus basin. It was founded around 1227 within the council of Montemayor created by Alfonso IX of León, from which it took its surname. Its landscape of oaks, ash trees, chestnut trees and walnut trees, and its continental climate of harsh winters and cool summer evenings, when the bells of the gathered livestock can be heard, have shaped an economy based on smallholder extensive cattle and sheep-and-goat farming, with little cultivation. The village retains two churches, the Humilladero hermitage, a defensive tower with a clock, and a farrier's shoeing frame.
The fork of the Valtornero
Nature
The village is set in the fork formed by the joining of the Valtornero stream with the river Sangusín. Despite being on the northern plateau, its waters go to the Alagón and from there to the Tagus, so that the municipal district belongs to the Tagus river basin.
