What to see and do in Sanchotello

Sanchotello
Village
Sanchotello is a municipality in the Salmantine comarca of the Sierra de Béjar, just over five kilometres from the city of Béjar, with about 205 inhabitants; from the Mirador de la Cruz one can make out the valley of the río Sangusín, the Sierra de Francia and the Picos de Valdesangil. Founded during the medieval repopulations, it passed after the death of Alfonso VII to the Castilian council of Ávila and in 1209 became part of the Community of Town and Land of Béjar. Until the mid-20th century it lived off a family-based farming and livestock economy, of small smallholdings of fruit, cereals and vegetables irrigated with water from streams and springs, until from the 1950s onward many residents also found work in the comarca's textile industry. It preserves the Humilladero hermitage, a farrier's shoeing frame, wayside crosses and the old railway station it shared with Fresnedoso, as well as La Picota, an old granite quarry.
The blessing of the fields
Activity
Every 31 May the fields, the farmland and the pastures of the municipal district are blessed from the so-called Peña de los Frailes. The main festivals are on 15 August and 14 September, with the carrying up and down of the Cristo del Humilladero.
