What to see and do in Ledrada

Ledrada
Village
Ledrada, in the comarca of the Sierra de Béjar and the judicial district of Béjar, has about 475 inhabitants. Its name refers to a spot covered in ivy — documented as "El Hedrada" in 1470 — an origin that ties in with the dedication of its hermitage of the Virgen de la Yedra. The territory remained depopulated for centuries, a no-man's-land after the clearance ordered by Alfonso I of Asturias around the year 750, and was only repopulated in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, mainly by people from Ávila and Burgos, when the Vía de la Plata served as the border between the kingdoms of León and Castile. Today it lives off the cured-meat industry and is renowned for its chorizos and hams, some protected under the Guijuelo designation of origin; it retains the Romanesque church of San Miguel Arcángel and a small tower.
