What to see and do in La Cabeza de Béjar

La Cabeza de Béjar
Village
La Cabeza de Béjar is a village of 55 inhabitants in the Salamancan Sierra de Béjar, 58 kilometres from Salamanca, crossed by the Ruta de la Plata dual carriageway. It lies beside the Mula stream, which rises at the Alto de Tonda and flows into the Tormes after skirting the lands of Guijuelo and Guijo de Ávila; as early as 1193 it was cited as the western boundary of the lands that Alfonso VIII granted to Ávila, marking the border with the Kingdom of León, which extended from here towards Salvatierra and Salamanca. From its old castle, a defensive post, the Calzada de Béjar took its name, the origin of the future Concejo de Villa y Tierra de Béjar. It retains the church of the Purísima Concepción, the hermitage of San Roque and the sites known as Castillo and La Atalaya.
The Arroyo de la Mula, border of two kingdoms
Historical milestone
A document of Alfonso VIII of 1193 fixes as the western boundary of the lands of Ávila the arroyo de la Mula, which rises at the height of Tonda and flows into the Tormes: beyond that stream the Kingdom of León began and that of Castile ended.
