What to see and do in Lagunilla

Lagunilla
Village
Lagunilla is a municipality of about 414 inhabitants in the Sierra de Béjar, at 910 metres above sea level, through whose municipal area passed the old Vía de la Plata linking Extremadura with the Meseta: here, according to scholars, stood the Roman mansio of Caelionicco or Vicus Caecilius, a resting place for armies marching up from Mérida. With the creation of the Concejo de la Mesta in 1273 by Alfonso X, the road gained importance as a transhumance route, and several branches, including the Cañada Real Merinas, crossed the village on the way to the pastures. It retains a notable group of buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries: the Episcopal palace of 1686, the hospital of Santo Domingo of 1696, the hermitage of the Cristo de los Afligidos of 1697, and the church of la Asunción, dating from around 1500.
The pilgrims' branch route to the Peña de Francia
Curiosity
A branch of the Vía de la Plata set out from Aldeanueva del Camino, passed through Lagunilla and Valdelageve and entered the Sierra de Francia: it was used in the Middle Ages by pilgrims who, on the way to Santiago, wished to venerate the Virgen de la Peña.
