What to see and do in Montemayor del Río

Montemayor del Río
Village
Montemayor del Río is a municipality in the province of Salamanca (Castile and León), in the sierra de Béjar, within the Sistema Central, next to the old Calzada de la Plata, at 677 metres above sea level. Its council, created around 1227 by Alfonso IX of León to demographically strengthen this strategic area of the kingdom, came to hold jurisdiction over fourteen villages, several of which still retain part of its name, such as Colmenar de Montemayor, Baños de Montemayor and Horcajo de Montemayor. Declared a historic-artistic site in 1982, and with about 245 inhabitants, it crowns its hill with the castillo de San Vicente, with six towers, four square and two semicircular; in its square, the old fountain uses the granite column of a former pillory as its central shaft.
