What to see and do in Peñacaballera

Peñacaballera
Village
Peñacaballera is a municipality in the Salamancan comarca of the Sierra de Béjar, on the border with the province of Cáceres, with about 150 inhabitants divided between the village itself and the almost depopulated settlement of the Colonia de San Miguel. Its name refers to the peñas caballeras, large granite blocks resting on a narrow base that gives them a certain air of instability, abundant across a municipal area crossed by the Ruta de la Plata, the old Roman road that linked the area with Galicia. It was founded around 1227 by the repopulation of Alfonso IX of León, when he created the council of Montemayor del Río, into which it remained integrated; in the mid-19th century it had 297 inhabitants on record, a population that has declined continuously since then to the current 149. Its traditional dish is calderillo bejarano.
The peñas caballeras
Nature
The village's name comes from the abundance of great granite boulders resting on the ground or on other rocks on a narrow base, with an air of instability that earned them the name of peñas or balancing stones.
