What to see and do in El Cerro

El Cerro
Village
El Cerro is a municipality of about 360 inhabitants in the Sierra de Béjar, province of Salamanca, formed together with the hamlet of Valdelamatanza, 19 kilometres from Béjar. From the La Dehesa recreation area, a kilometre from the village, opens the viewpoint known as El Balcón de Extremadura, with views towards Las Hurdes and the Jerte Valley, and in the surroundings Roman and Celtic hillforts still unstudied are preserved. The area was the land of the Vettones, who raised cattle and pigs, until after the Lusitanian War it passed into Roman hands. The present-day village arose around 1227, when King Alfonso IX of León created the council of Montemayor del Río, into which it was incorporated. In the mid-19th century it had 665 inhabitants, almost double today's figure.

Nature
In the recreational area of La Dehesa, a kilometre from the village, opens a viewpoint that the residents call the Balcony of Extremadura for the view that the altitude of the municipal district gives over the lands to the south, towards the Ambroz valley.
