What to see and do in Palencia de Negrilla

Palencia de Negrilla
Village
Palencia de Negrilla is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of La Armuña. Founded by the kings of León in the Middle Ages and resettled by people who had come from the city of Palencia, it was first called simply Palençia; the «de Negrilla» was added later because of its location next to that neighbouring town. It was later ceded to the diocese of Salamanca, forming a cathedral lordship. It also owes its name to the negrillos, the common elms that populated the area until a blight decimated them in the 1970s and 1980s, leaving the holm oak as the dominant tree. With about 140 inhabitants, it grows the lentil of La Armuña, and every Good Friday La carrera is run: four residents carry the figure of Christ at full speed to the square of Negrilla de Palencia and back.
The Good Friday race
Curiosity
On the morning of Good Friday four residents would carry the carving of the Most Holy Christ at full speed to the neighbouring village and come back running. Legend explains it by the plague: the healthy stayed here and the sick were quarantined in Negrilla.

Monument
Declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) on 19 December 1969, the parish church presides over a village resettled with people from the city of Palencia, from which it took its name, and later ceded to the Salamanca bishopric as a seigneury.
