What to see and do in Castellanos de Villiquera

Castellanos de Villiquera
Village
Castellanos de Villiquera, in the La Armuña comarca, 10 km from Salamanca, brings together the settlements of Carbajosa de Armuña, Castellanos de Villiquera, La Mata de Armuña and Villiquera, with about 633 inhabitants in total. It was founded around 975 by Castilian settlers from the army of Ramiro II of León, next to the old settlement of Villiquera, already half depopulated by then and mentioned in documents until the 15th century. Its inhabitants are called “cucos” (cuckoos), after the two cuckoos that appear on the coat of arms behind the main altar of its church. It was sited on high ground to escape the floods of the Encina stream.

Curiosity
The residents are called «cucos» after the two birds of that name that appear on the coat of arms behind the high altar of the parish church of San Juan Bautista, held in the village to be the settlement's own arms.

Historical milestone
Castellanos de Villiquera was founded by Castilian settlers from the army of Ramiro II of León, who reigned between 931 and 951; the village's sister entry dates the founding to 'around 975', a year that does not fit that reign, so the sources disagree on the exact date.
