What to see and do in Tardáguila

Tardáguila
Village
Tardáguila is a municipality in the Salamanca comarca of La Armuña, with 193 inhabitants, whose name comes from the oronym meaning “the eagle's hillock,” documented as Oterdaguila as early as 1265 and as Otero del Águila in deeds of 1240. It had Roman settlement, according to the excavations ordered around 1880 by the Marquis of la Mina in the Arcillo dehesa, where funerary steles, pottery, buckles, women's ornaments and buildings with Latin inscriptions were found. Resettled in the Middle Ages by the kings of León within the quarter of Armuña, it was called Oterdáguila until 1752, when it already appeared under its current name, as a crown land devoted to growing rain-fed wheat and rye. Today it is a humble village, with streets lined with many old houses, where rain-fed cereal predominates and, under irrigation, sugar beet, alfalfa and potato; the old Arcillo and Espino-Arcillo farmsteads, north of the village, are today owned by its residents.

Curiosity
Cited as Oterdáguila in 1265 and as Otero del Águila in deeds of 1240, when it had twenty households, the name is of oronymic origin and is related to Tardobispo, in Zamora, and to Taragudo, the sharp hill north of Topas.
The Roman stelae of Arcillo
Monument
The excavations ordered around 1880 by the Marquis of La Mina on the dehesa of Arcillo brought to light funerary stelae, ceramics, brooches and women's ornaments, as well as constructions with Latin inscriptions of the Roman period.
