What to see and do in La Vellés

La Vellés
Village
La Vellés is a municipality of about 566 inhabitants in the comarca of La Armuña, province of Salamanca, founded in the early Middle Ages by the kings of the kingdom of León under the name Avilés, already documented in the 13th century, betraying a resettlement by people who had come from Asturias; the place name gradually changed over time into today's La Vellés. From the 12th to the 15th century it formed part of the Abadengo de la Armuña, a lordship of the chapter of Salamanca cathedral, on which small hamlets now vanished also depended, such as Gansinos, documented since 1242, Armenteros and Pedrosillo el Franco. In the mid-19th century the place had 725 inhabitants.
Avilés, the village of the Asturians
Curiosity
Thirteenth-century documents call the village Avilés, which suggests that the kings of León resettled it with people from Asturias, then part of the kingdom; from that form the present name of La Vellés derived over time.
