The castle of Lagunas Rubias Monument · Aldeanueva de Figueroa, La Armuña, Salamanca Image of Aldeanueva de Figueroa, not of the place itself. An archaeological site of a ruined medieval fortification, located west of the houses of the Lagunas Rubias estate, in the municipality of Aldeanueva de Figueroa (Salamanca), also known as El Palomar. It was built by the Kingdom of León in the 12th-13th centuries, using the technique of rammed rubble, or shuttered masonry, as part of the defensive system facing the Kingdom of Castile, and was extended over 73 years of dynastic wars between Castilian and Leonese monarchs and against Portugal and the Almohads. After the kingdoms of León and Castile were unified in 1230 under Ferdinand III, the fortification fell out of use and was abandoned. It has been protected since the 1949 decree and the 1985 heritage law. Photo: Ramajero (CC0) What to see and do in Aldeanueva de Figueroa
