What to see and do in Peñaparda

Peñaparda
Village
Peñaparda is a village in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the Campo de Robledo and El Rebollar sub-comarcas, with about 298 inhabitants split between Peñaparda and the Dehesa de Perosín. It arose from the resettlement by the kings of León in the Middle Ages. It is famous for its "panderu cuadráu", an instrument of Asturian-Leonese origin played here with a drummer's club, in a manner found nowhere else; to it are danced the ajecháu, the salteáu and the corríu brincáu, as well as the more solemn ofretoriu, dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario on the first Sunday of October. The village also preserves the Leonese speech of El Rebollar and has the Linen Museum.

Nature
The river Águeda, which further down the Palaeolithic hunters of Siega Verde engraved, marks here the northern boundary of the municipal district at 864 metres of altitude. Between ravines and a small plain next to the village opens one of the wildest stretches of its course.

Curiosity
This square tambourine is played with a stick similar to that of the drummer, a technique considered unique in the world. It accompanies dances of its own such as the ajecháu, the salteáu, the corríu brincáu and the ofretoriu, the last reserved for the pipe and drum.
