What to see and do in Fuenteguinaldo

Fuenteguinaldo
Village
Fuenteguinaldo is a town of about 667 inhabitants in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the Campo de Robledo sub-comarca, province of Salamanca. It sits on a hill at 850 metres above sea level, with streets laid out in a radial and concentric pattern, characteristic of Roman settlements, around its grand 16th-century parish church, which holds an altarpiece by Lucas Mitata, a high point of Salamancan Romanist Mannerism. Its district contains the remains of the castro of Irueña, of Celtic origin later Romanised. The town was founded during the medieval resettlement by the kings of León and was the headquarters of the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War.
Altarpiece by Lucas Mitata in Fuenteguinaldo
Monument
The parish church of the 16th century holds a sculpted altarpiece by Lucas Mitata, considered a major piece of Salamancan Mannerist Romanism. Its presence in a village of little more than six hundred inhabitants surprises the visitor who reaches the border.
The hillfort of Irueña
Nature
On the outskirts of the village survive the remains of a hillfort of Vettone origin, built in the second half of the Iron Age, around the 6th and 5th centuries BC, and later Romanised, with its walls and layout still legible on the ground. It lies on the left bank of the river Águeda, near its confluence with the Rolloso stream, some five kilometres from the village, in the comarca of Campo de Robledo. Access is from the top of the stream's dam along a dirt track, and the site, still in the process of consolidation and enhancement, retains abundant undergrowth that makes it hard to take in as a whole. It is one of the sites that explain the ancient settlement of the area before the border.
Horseback bull runs of Fuenteguinaldo
Activity
The third weekend of August the village holds its fairs and festivities with bull runs on horseback, in which the riders drive the fighting animals from the dehesa to the square. It is one of the liveliest traditions of the Campo de Argañán.
