Village
Municipality of 1,335 inhabitants (2025), 94.18 km² and 637 m altitude (ranging between 283 and 1,367 m, at the Jañona peak), which gives its name to the comarca. Of Roman origin (Catobriga), it was reconquered in 1212 and raised to villa status in 1341. In the late 15th century it hosted the Academia del Maestre, directed by the humanist Antonio de Nebrija. Its settlement was declared a conjunto histórico in 1994.
Torre de Almenara de Gata
Monument
Ruin of a pentagonal fortress with panoramic views over the sierra; next to it stands the parish church of San Pedro (1508-1609).
Fuente de El Chorro de Gata
Monument
Granite ashlar fountain bearing the coat of arms of Emperor Carlos I. Local tradition holds that a converso stonemason may have hidden subversive symbolism in its decoration.
