What to see and do in Torre de Don Miguel

Torre de Don Miguel
Village
Municipality of 481 inhabitants (2025, compared with more than 1,700 in the early 20th century), 12 km² and 559 m altitude. Founded in the early 13th century by Frey Miguel Sánchez, commander of a military order, it became independent from Gata around 1428-1441. The 17th-century wars with Portugal and 18th-century epidemics decimated its population.
Rollo jurisdiccional de Torre de Don Miguel
Monument
Reconstructed Gothic-style jurisdictional pillory that symbolises the municipal independence the village won from Santibáñez el Alto between 1426 and 1441, confirmed by definitive privileges granted by Juan de Zúñiga in 1485-1486.
Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Bienvenida
Monument
15th-century hermitage dedicated to the village's patron saint, the Virgen de la Bienvenida, in whose honour a pilgrimage is held on Easter Sunday.
