Villasrubias
Village
Villasrubias is a village in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo and the El Rebollar sub-comarca, situated on the northern face of the sierra de Gata, at 849 metres above sea level, with 231 inhabitants and an area of 39.50 km². The terrain, of slate and granite with veins of ochre earth, preserves two abandoned tin mines, at Las Medianas and La Canalita, worked until the 1950s; according to the oldest residents, gold was also extracted at the Las Medianas one. The river Frío used to power several mills now gone or in ruins, among them that of tío Adolfo, which had a turbine and a saw and came to supply electric light to Peñaparda; its dam later fed the Castaño hydroelectric plant, which from 1952 electrified Villasrubias, Robleda and Martiago.
