What to see and do in Navasfrías

Navasfrías
Village
Navasfrías, a town of about 365 inhabitants in the Salamancan comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, occupies the south-western tip of the province, on the border with both Portugal and the province of Cáceres. It is part of the El Rebollar natural area, which links up with the Portuguese Sierra de Malcata nature reserve, and preserves one of the most extensive and valuable oak woods on the peninsula, a centuries-old rebollo oak forest in the La Genestosa site. Its first historical mention is in a grant by Alfonso IX of León in 1219, and through the area passed the Roman road linking Coria with Ciudad Rodrigo. Its coat of arms, approved in 2016, recalls with a rampant lion its former belonging to the Kingdom of León and with a fleur-de-lis cross its former belonging to the Order of Alcántara.
Church of San Juan Evangelista de Navasfrías
Monument
Parish church of Romanesque design dedicated to the village's patron, at 886 metres of altitude and a step from the Portuguese border. It presides over a locality of El Rebollar where on 24 June San Juan is celebrated with bull runs on horseback through the streets.
Trout, mushrooms and wild game meats
Food and drink
In the rivers Águeda, Roladrón and Rubiós trout are fished, and the melojo oak woods give mushrooms in autumn. With these and with the roast meats of the pig slaughter a mountain cooking is composed that has little to do with that of the Salamanca plain.
