La Alameda de Gardón
Village
La Alameda de Gardón is a hamlet in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the Campo de Argañán, founded during the resettlement that the kings of León carried out in the area between the 11th and 12th centuries. The Treaty of Alcañices of 1297, which ceded the Riba-Coa to Portugal, left it on the border; until then the Luso-Leonese boundary ran along the river Coa. To reinforce the new boundary the castle of Gardón was built, which Portuguese troops razed and burned in the 17th century. Today it has about 67 inhabitants and preserves the church of Santiago Apóstol and the chapel of the Cristo.
