What to see and do in Saelices el Chico

Saelices el Chico
Village
Saelices el Chico is a village in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the Salamanca stretch of the Campo de Argañán, with 175 inhabitants and a district that includes the deserted hamlets of Berrocal del Río, Majuelos and Sageras del Río. Beneath its urban centre the remains of a 4th-century Roman villa have been found, with a mosaic-floored corridor in good condition, and near the site a slate-and-brick bridge crosses the Grande stream on the old Lumbrales drove road. The church of San Benito recalls that the hamlet belonged to the Benedictine Order ever since Ferdinand II of León granted it in 1169. The village had an open-pit uranium mine, worked by the state company ENUSA between 1974 and the end of 2001 and later restored; its closure worsened an exodus that has reduced the population to a sixth of its size in half a century.
