Espeja
Village
Espeja is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in Castilla y León, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo and the Campo de Argañán sub-comarca, with 212 inhabitants spread over 98.40 square kilometres of the Campo de Azaba. The first documentary reference dates from 1376, as communal land of the Concejo of Ciudad Rodrigo; it did not become a lordship town until 1626, when it was acquired by Fernando de Herrera Maldonado de Chaves, whose son was named viscount and marquis of Espeja in 1685. During the Peninsular War, French troops destroyed the medieval hermitage of San Cristóbal, without the so-called "pegueros" managing to stand up to them. In the square of the parish church, the British general Henry Mackinnon, who fell in 1812, was buried with military honours.
