Villar de Ciervo
Village
Villar de Ciervo is a municipality in the Campo de Argañán sub-comarca, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, province of Salamanca, with about 260 inhabitants. Its name joins the Leonese word "villar", meaning village, to the abundance of deer that there were in its district when it was founded, during the resettlement carried out by the kings of León between the late 12th and early 13th centuries, then within the Kingdom of León. It preserves the remains of Roman tombs and old sacristies, and lies very close to the Real Fuerte de la Concepción, in neighbouring Aldea del Obispo. It celebrates its patron, San Agustín, on 28 August, the same patronage under which its church stands. In the mid-19th century the place had as many as 957 inhabitants, compared with 260 today.
