Gallegos de Argañán
Village
Gallegos de Argañán is a municipality in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the province of Salamanca, that brings together five settlements: Cuéllar, Gallegos de Argañán, Gallimazo, Marialba and Puentecilla, with about 259 inhabitants. Its name recalls the resettlements of Galicians that the Leonese king Ferdinand II brought to the area around 1157, on highly fertile cereal-growing land that gives its name to the addition "Argañán". In the main chapel of the parish church a Roman stone is preserved with a votive inscription to Jupiter, a reminder of ancient Vettonia, whose Celtic territory reached as far as the Tormes. On the Gallimazo estate remain the ruins of a castro between Mount Zamarreno and the river Águeda, and a Vettonian boar sculpture from the village is now kept in the Provincial Museum of Salamanca.
