Villar de la Yegua
Village
Villar de la Yegua is a municipality in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the province of Salamanca, with about 151 inhabitants, whose district also brings together the settlements of Barquilla and Serranillo. Founded during the medieval Leonese resettlement, it appears documented under its present name from 1376; it was later called Villar de Caraveo, until the residents recovered the original name by paying 15,000 maravedís. Its border condition made it in 1640 the scene of the Battle of Villar de la Yegua, in the Portuguese Restoration War, and it later suffered poverty after the War of the Spanish Succession. Its church of San Juan Bautista boasts a slender tower built by Hernando de Güemes in 1535 and a Baroque altarpiece attributed to a member of the Churriguera family, probably Manuel de Larra.
