What to see and do in Aldea del Obispo

Aldea del Obispo
Village
Aldea del Obispo is a municipality in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the Campo de Argañán, province of Salamanca, made up of the settlements of Aldea del Obispo and Castillejo de Dos Casas. It owes its name to the lordship that Ferdinand II of León granted to the bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo in the 12th century, within the jurisdiction of Ciudad Rodrigo. The loss of the Riba-Coa in the Treaty of Alcañices of 1297 turned the town into a border settlement, which later led to the building nearby of the Real Fuerte de la Concepción, a military stronghold on the border with Portugal alongside Ciudad Rodrigo, San Felices de los Gallegos and Almeida. It also preserves the church of San Sebastián and the Caserón del Obispo. With 245 inhabitants (INE 2025), it celebrates its festivals on 20 January and 15 May.
Real Fuerte de la Concepción
Monument
A bastioned fortress built in 1663 and 1664 by order of the Duke of Osuna with the engineer Simón Jocquet, and rebuilt between 1735 and 1758 under Pedro Moreau. Partially restored between 2006 and 2012, it has been a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 6 August 1992. It stands on the Cerro de Gardón, beside the river Turones, on the border with Portugal, and in 1810 it was almost destroyed by Wellington's English army during the War of Independence, remaining abandoned until its partial restoration in the early 21st century. It functioned as a hotel for twelve years, though it no longer offers that service today.
