What to see and do in Fuentes de Oñoro

Fuentes de Oñoro
Village
Fuentes de Oñoro is a town in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the Campo de Argañán, which forms a single urban area with the Portuguese Vilar Formoso and is the main border crossing between Spain and Portugal, on one of the oldest borders in Europe, La Raya, fixed along this stretch by the Treaty of Alcañices of 1297. Resettled in the Middle Ages by the Leonese kings, it has about 1,012 inhabitants. In the spring of 1811, during the Peninsular War, it was the scene of the battle that pitted Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese armies against the French under Marshal Masséna. Its history changed with the opening, on 25 May 1886, of the station on the Salamanca-Vilar Formoso railway.
The Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro
Historical milestone
In the spring of 1811, over three days, 36,000 Anglo-Portuguese infantry under Wellington withstood the attack of Masséna's 42,000 troops at Fuentes de Oñoro. The outcome was tactically indecisive, with more than 2,800 French casualties, but it allowed Wellington to maintain the blockade of Almeida.
