La Alamedilla
Village
La Alamedilla is a hamlet in the Campo de Argañán, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, province of Salamanca, with about 94 inhabitants, located right on the border with Portugal. The district was not a border area until 1297, when the Kingdom of León lost the Riba-Coa area to Portugal, an event that led to the founding of the settlement; in 1811, during the Peninsular War, the seventh division of the Anglo-Portuguese army came to be stationed there. Because of its border condition it was traditionally bilingual, with Portuguese as the spoken language, and a fala related to that of the Jálama valley, in northern Cáceres, still survives, one that philologists do not classify unanimously, although in La Alamedilla it is considered a variety of Portuguese with Leonese features.
