Puerto Seguro
Village
Puerto Seguro is a hamlet in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo and the Campo de Argañán, situated on the border with Portugal and within the Arribes del Duero natural park. It was called Barba del Puerco until 1916. Over the river Águeda there was a Roman bridge, now gone, which was replaced in the 12th-13th centuries by another in Romanesque style, of which the arch on the San Felices side and the piers are still preserved; for centuries it was the only crossing point between the mouth of the Águeda on the Duero and Ciudad Rodrigo, and its arches, destroyed in various wars, were rebuilt in 1646, in 1808 and in 1906. Through the district runs the old Roman road of El Abadengo, and during the Peninsular War it was the scene of fighting between English and French troops in 1810. Today it has barely 52 inhabitants.
