Real Fuerte de la Concepción Monument · Aldea del Obispo, Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca A bastioned fortress built in 1663 and 1664 by order of the Duke of Osuna with the engineer Simón Jocquet, and rebuilt between 1735 and 1758 under Pedro Moreau. Partially restored between 2006 and 2012, it has been a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 6 August 1992. It stands on the Cerro de Gardón, beside the river Turones, on the border with Portugal, and in 1810 it was almost destroyed by Wellington's English army during the War of Independence, remaining abandoned until its partial restoration in the early 21st century. It functioned as a hotel for twelve years, though it no longer offers that service today. Photo: Carlosblh (Copyrighted free use) What to see and do in Aldea del Obispo
