What to see and do in San Muñoz

San Muñoz
Village
San Muñoz is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the Campo de Salamanca district, within the La Huebra sub-district, 46 kilometres from the provincial capital. Its municipal area, home to about 192 people across 53.90 km², also includes the villages of Agustínez, Buenabarba, Gallegos de Huebra and Villa Adelfa. It owes its name to a certain Sancho Muñoz, a surname that shortened over time into today's San Muñoz. In its stretch of the Huebra river valley, Acheulean remains have been found, dated to between 350,000 and 128,000 years old, and nearby stands the Vettonian hillfort of Yecla la Vieja, suggesting the area was inhabited by this pre-Roman people.
Christ of the Good Death of San Muñoz
Monument
The Cristo de la Buena Muerte de San Muñoz (Campo de Salamanca) is a wooden carving from the late 16th century, attributed with near-total certainty to Juan de Juni or his workshop, kept in the right-hand chapel of the church of San Juan Bautista, a temple reached by a flight of steps on the Teso del Calvario. It is considered one of the most valuable religious works in the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo and has been shown in exhibitions such as Imágenes de Misterio (2000) and Las Edades del Hombre (2006, Ciudad Rodrigo). The Brotherhood of the Vera Cruz carries it in procession on the night of Holy Saturday.
Tower of el Reloj de San Muñoz
Monument
Raised in 1897 by the Palencia architect Moisés Díez, it presides over the village's main square and remains the visual landmark of a town set on the river Huebra, in the comarca that watercourse identifies.
Skirmish of San Muñoz
Historical milestone
During the allied retreat from Burgos, in November 1812, some sixty-eight thousand men of the allied troops and sixty thousand French clashed beside the Huebra, in a day of rain and mud that ended without a clear decision at the river ford.
