What to see and do in La Fuente de San Esteban

La Fuente de San Esteban
Village
La Fuente de San Esteban is a Salamanca town of about 1,293 inhabitants that also groups together the villages of Boadilla, Muñoz and Santa Olalla de Yeltes, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, beside the río Huebra. It was called simply La Fuente until the creation of the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo in the 12th century. It was an important railway junction from 1887, when the line to Barca de Alba was opened linking Salamanca with Porto, closed almost a century later, in 1985. On 21 December 1978, at a level crossing on the Salamanca-Fuentes de Oñoro line beside the hamlet of Muñoz, a locomotive struck a school bus and caused 32 deaths and 56 injuries, almost all of them schoolchildren: the most serious railway accident to occur in Spain from a collision at a level crossing.
The Salamanca–Porto railway
Historical milestone
In 1887 the railway line was opened that linked Salamanca with Oporto and turned this locality into an important station of the border, with its movement of passengers and goods. The line remained in service until its closure in 1985.
