What to see and do in Renedo de la Vega

Renedo de la Vega
Village
Renedo de la Vega is a municipality of 193 inhabitants in the comarca of Vega-Valdavia, province of Palencia, made up of four settlements: Renedo de la Vega, the capital, Albalá de la Vega, Moslares de la Vega and Santillán de la Vega. It preserves the monastery of Santa María de la Vega, a Cistercian house in Mudéjar style, founded in 1215 by Rodrigo Rodríguez Girón and Inés Pérez as a daughter house of the monastery of Santa María de Benavides. The founders' tombs, once in the main chapel, were sold around 1925 and are now in the Hispanic Society in New York. Declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a heritage protection category, now folded into the BIC designation) in 1931, its ruined state has led to its inclusion on the Red List of Heritage at Risk. It also holds a rollo de justicia (a stone pillory), now converted into a wayside cross and moved to the cemetery.
Monastery of Santa María de la Vega
Monument
A Cistercian monastery with notable Mudéjar elements, today badly deteriorated, which remains the most important building of a municipality that groups together Albalá, Moslares and Santillán de la Vega. It was founded as a daughter house of the monastery of Santa María de Benavides by Rodrigo Rodríguez Girón and Inés Pérez, who in 1215 donated to the community properties received from King Henry I of Castile in Renedo and other villages near Carrión de los Condes. The founders' tombs were sold around 1925 and are now kept at the Hispanic Society in New York; another sarcophagus from the group can be seen at the Archaeological Museum of Palencia. Although it has been a listed Monumento Histórico-Artístico (an earlier heritage-protection designation, predecessor to the BIC) since 1931, its ruinous state keeps it on the Red List of Endangered Heritage.
Founding of the monastery of la Vega
Historical milestone
Rodrigo Rodríguez Girón and his wife Inés Pérez founded the monastery of Santa María de la Vega in 1215, one of the Cistercian centres of the Carrión basin during the Late Middle Ages.
Justice pillar turned into a wayside cross
Curiosity
The municipality's old jurisdictional pillar was converted into a wayside cross and moved to the cemetery, where it is preserved and protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC); the change of function erased its punitive meaning.
