Monzón de Campos
Village
Monzón de Campos is a market town in Palencia with around 605 inhabitants, seat of the Bajo Carrión y Ucieza association of municipalities along with seventeen other towns. It was the capital of the county of Monzón in the 10th century under the Ansúrez family and, later, of the merindad of Monzón; the Carrión and Ucieza rivers meet within its municipal area, and Spain's first flour mill was set up here. Its castle operated as a Parador Nacional de Turismo between 1966 and 1988, and after the closure of the ceramics factory in the 1980s and of the sugar refinery in 2003, the municipality today has only a third of the inhabitants it had in the 1960s. It celebrates the Exaltation of the Turnips with a naval battle of turnips.
