Fuentes de Valdepero
Village
Fuentes de Valdepero is a village in the Palencia part of Tierra de Campos, at 770 metres, whose castle belonged from the late 14th century to the Sarmiento lineage, who rebuilt it in the mid-15th century; besieged and razed by the comuneros under Bishop Acuña in 1521, it was later rebuilt by Andrés de Ribera, who reinforced the tower and sloped its walls. It later belonged to the counts of Fuentes de Valdepero, a title granted by Philip II, and from the 18th century was a lordship of the House of Alba. On 12 July 1935 a tornado caused great damage in the village and one death. Today the castle, dating from the 14th to the 16th centuries, houses the Archive of the Diputación de Palencia. The local economy is based on agriculture, livestock farming and the food industry. It has around 490 inhabitants.
