Ribas de Campos
Village
Ribas de Campos is a village of about 150 inhabitants in the Tierra de Campos region, in the province of Palencia, crossed by the Canal de Castilla, which in Madoz's time had 307 households, then under the name of Rivas. Between the censuses of 1842 and 1857 the municipality absorbed that of Priorato de Santa Cruz. Its Premonstratensian monastery of Santa Cruz de Ribas, founded in the 12th century by Alfonso VIII and occupied by monks of the order in 1176, is a notable example of the transition from late Romanesque to Palencia Gothic; declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Historic-Artistic Monument, a former Spanish heritage-protection designation) in 1931, its present state of neglect has led to its inclusion on the Red List of endangered heritage.
