Husillos
Village
Husillos is a village of around 415 inhabitants in the Palencia part of Tierra de Campos, sitting on the right bank of the río Carrión, next to an old stone bridge. In 906 the church of Santa María was rebuilt here, having been destroyed during the Muslim occupation, and in the 10th century the Abbey of Santa María de Fusiellos was founded, which in the late 11th and mid-12th centuries hosted two national councils of great political and religious weight. Philip II received from its abbot the foot of San Lorenzo as a gift for El Escorial. The collegiate church, in transition from Romanesque to Gothic, has been a Monumento Nacional (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation, now Bien de Interés Cultural) since 1931; of its old cloister only the plot of ground remains. From here also comes a 2nd-century Roman sarcophagus, found in the 19th century and now in the National Archaeological Museum.
