Villaumbrales
Village
Villaumbrales is a village of about 630 inhabitants in the Tierra de Campos region, in the province of Palencia, ten kilometres from the provincial capital, through which runs the Ramal de Campos branch of the Canal de Castilla. In 1210 Alfonso VIII gave the town to his steward Fernando Sánchez, who ceded it to the church of Toledo in 1215; in 1335 the archbishop of Toledo gave its lordship to Leonor de Guzmán, favourite of Alfonso XI, and it was not until the 16th century, under Philip II, that it became a royal town. In 1520 it joined Grijota and Villamartín de Campos in the Revolt of the Comuneros of Castile. The village housed a shipyard for the repair of boats of the Canal de Castilla. Since 2008 the Casa del Rey, an 18th-century building, has housed the museum devoted to that hydraulic work.
