Villalobón
Village
Villalobón is a municipality in the Palencia stretch of Tierra de Campos, next to the capital, with around 1,955 inhabitants. Its name joins the Latin word villa, estate or farm, to the personal name Lopón. Alfonso VIII incorporated it in 1202 into the episcopal lordship of Palencia, granting it its own fuero under its first lord, bishop Arderico, until Philip II dismembered it around 1580 and incorporated it into the Royal Patrimony; the council then bought back its villazgo status for 16,000 maravedís per resident so as to remain under the Crown. In the mid-19th century it had 547 inhabitants. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, from the first quarter of the 16th century, has a single nave with star-ribbed vaults and holds a main altarpiece from the last third of that century and a baptismal font also from the 16th century.
