Amusco
Village
Amusco is a town of about 415 inhabitants in the Tierra de Campos comarca, in the province of Palencia, 20 kilometres from the capital. Its Romanesque church of San Pedro, so large it can be seen from far away, is known locally as the Pajarón de Campos. In the Middle Ages it was the economic and defensive centre of a coalition of nine towns -among them Amayuelas de Suso and de Yuso, Támara and Piña de Campos-, protected by walls and defensive underground passages, and it lived on the wool industry and the mills of the river Ucieza. With the arrival of the Manrique de Lara family it became a manorial estate. It was one of the largest Jewish communities in the province and preserves the remains of a 14th-century synagogue, half buried because Castilian laws forbade it from exceeding the height of churches.
