Mazariegos
Village
Mazariegos lies in the heart of the Palencia part of Tierra de Campos, seventeen kilometres from the provincial capital towards León, at the crossing of the N-610 with the road leading to Fuentes de Nava; part of its municipal area is protected within the La Nava-Campos Norte special protection area for birds. Established as a municipality after the Old Regime, in the district of Frechilla, it had as many as 593 residents in 1842. It preserves traditional dovecotes, the remains of the old station of the Secundarios de Castilla railway, the church of la Asunción, from the 13th century, the hermitage of Santiago and a 1940s concrete bridge over the abandoned track. Its festivities are held on 15 May, for San Isidro, and on 15 and 16 August, for la Asunción and San Roque. Today it has around 200 inhabitants.
