Autilla del Pino
Village
Autilla del Pino is a village in the Tierra de Campos comarca, in the province of Palencia, perched at 860 metres above the páramo; it has 223 inhabitants. Its name would mean the place of the small height beside a rocky hill, and as early as the late 11th century it was cited as Villa Ota or Villa Otiella. It was walled, and of that wall only one gate is preserved, the main arch; below the village runs a row of cellars, today converted into snack bars and taverns. From its viewpoint, known as the sea of Castile, the whole of Tierra de Campos can be taken in, and even, more than a hundred kilometres away, the Montaña Palentina. It also preserves the Herrerian church of the Asunción, from the 16th century with remains from the 13th, and an agricultural and ethnographic museum.
