Castromocho
Village
Castromocho is a village in Palencia province with about 195 inhabitants, at 762 metres above sea level, in the middle of the Tierra de Campos plain and on the banks of the Valdeginate river, a tributary of the Carrión. On the slope of the San Pelayo hill remains of huts from the early Iron Age and Roman finds have been discovered, and the village was resettled around 1100 after the Reconquista, when its wall was also built; the alternation of lordship between the Castro and Cisneros families gave rise to the coat of arms with two towers and two swans that it still bears. During the Golden Age it had three churches, more than thirty clergymen and a Franciscan convent; according to local tradition, the father of Lope de Vega was baptised in its parish church in 1523. Its church of Santa María de Colaña, from the 15th century, holds a sculpture by Luisa Roldán.
