What to see and do in Baquerín de Campos

Baquerín de Campos
Village
Baquerín de Campos is a hamlet in the Frechilla district, in the province of Palencia, whose name comes not from the trade of cowherd but from an early Mozarabic settler called Ibakrim; in the mid-19th century, with about a hundred houses, it was known as Vaquerín de Campos. Its church of Santa María de Arbis, from the 16th century and enlarged in the 17th and 18th centuries, covers its nave with a coffered ceiling of Baroque plasterwork and holds a fine mid-17th-century main altarpiece, with reliefs attributed to a follower of Gregorio Fernández; part of the altarpiece was restored at San Zoilo de Carrión de los Condes after a risk of the dome collapsing. It had 431 inhabitants in 1900 and barely twenty today.
