Torremormojón
Village
Torremormojón is a hamlet of about forty inhabitants in the southwest of Palencia, in the Tierra de Campos region and at the foot of the Torozos hills. Its castle, built in the 10th century by order of Asur Fernández to reinforce the nearby castle of Monzón, stands on a hill from which it dominates a huge stretch of the region and is known as the Estrella de Campos; its holders included Pedro Ansúrez and, later, the Girón, Téllez de Meneses and Fernández de Velasco families, Constables of Castile. During the Revolt of the Comuneros, in January 1521, royal troops took refuge here before the plundering by Comunero troops. Next to the castle the church of Santa María del Castillo is preserved, and in September the hamlet honours the Virgen del Campanil with a pilgrimage.
